South Korea's leading presidential candidate Moon Jae is committed to downsizing coal-fired power plants and phasing out nuclear reactors in the country, while seeking to buy Russian natural gas to meet electricity demand and combat climate change.
The shutdown of old coal-fired power plants will not greatly affect the country's power supplies if the country also increases investment in renewable energy projects, Moon stressed, noting the need to select low-carbon sources.
Moon is the favorite in South Korea's next presidential election, ahead of former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in recent opinion polls.
Current President Park Geun-hye was suspended from office in December 2016 after the National Assembly voted to impeach her. Presidential elections must be held within 60 days if the Constitutional Court approves impeachment of Park, so the next president could be elected in May.
Moon is the main candidate for the Democratic Party, the country's largest party, with 121 seats in the 300-seat National Assembly.
Moon's comments came because South Korea is increasingly being hit by high concentrations of fine dust in the air, caused mainly by the activities of coal-fired power plants, causing public health concerns.
