Russian customs officials stop rail and road transportation of liquefied natural gas destined for Ukraine. The Russian authorities explain that the suspension of the transportation of liquefied gas is dictated by security concerns, because Russian fuel is used in Ukraine for military purposes.
According to analysts, Moscow's explanations are dubious and rather more logical from the point of view of exerting economic pressure on Ukraine. Liquefied gas, commonly referred to as propane, is generally a cheaper alternative to other fuels. Liquefied gas is widely used as fuel in cars, for heating, or for generating electricity.
Ukraine is the second largest foreign LNG market for Russia after Poland. Last year, Russia exported about 800 thousand tons of liquefied gas.
