Gazprom and the Slovakian gas transmission operator Eustream signed an agreement on gas transportation. The contract amount is 5.3 billion euros. The agreement is a framework agreement and will be valid until autumn 2050. In accordance with its provisions, gas will be transported through the country to the European Union. The agreement is practically a continuation of the current agreement covering the period 2009-2028.
According to EU experts, the new agreement is very interesting for several reasons. But the most important of them is the issue of gas transit, since Moscow has long announced its desire to reduce its dependence on transit from third countries. Among other things, the construction of Nord Stream and the construction of Nord Stream 2 are noted.
Thus, Russia and Gazprom are reducing the importance of the main route for gas transmission to Europe, which are pipelines through the territory of Ukraine. These plans are causing discontent in some countries in the region, so gas to the EU will practically be supplied from a single, Russian, source. Slovakia simply has no alternative, since more than 97 percent of gas to Slovakia comes from Russia.
The new agreement will provide transit through the territory of Slovakia, which enables Bratislava to continue to receive Russian gas and continue to earn on transit.
