India overtook Japan to become the world's second largest stainless steel producer. The first is, of course, China.
India produced 3.324 million tonnes of stainless steel last year, while Japan produced 3.093 million tonnes, according to the International Steel Stainless Forum. A year earlier, the production of these countries amounted to: 3060 million tons and 3.061 million tons, respectively. India has been increasing its stainless steel production for several years while Japan is producing less and less. In 2010, production in India was 2.022 million tonnes and Japan's 3.427 million tonnes.
Analysts predict that the growth momentum in stainless steel production in India will continue over the next few years.
The largest producer is still China, which increased production from 2010 to 2016 from 11.256 million tonnes to 24.938 million tonnes.
At the same time, stainless steel production in the European Union fell from 7.494 million tonnes to 7.2 million tonnes. Global production has been increasing since 2010. Then it was 31.09 million tons, and last year already 45.778 million tons.
