US President Trump, during a speech at the Energy Department headquarters, announced a number of energy sector measures, including efforts by the US nuclear power industry to ensure expansion of US coal exports as well as the construction of new coal facilities overseas.
Trump said his government will try to expand nuclear power by conducting a "comprehensive review" of current policies to jointly determine how to revitalize the industry.
Nuclear power currently provides about 20% of the US's energy, but the share of nuclear power is expected to drop to 11% by 2050 as some of the country's aging nuclear power plants are shut down. The viability of new large-scale nuclear power plants remains in question.
The Treasury Department will try to "remove barriers" to funding high-efficiency coal plants overseas, Trump said. The administration hopes to boost coal exports to the United States by encouraging construction of coal plants overseas, he said.
The outlook for new coal plants in many parts of the world is murky because green natural gas prices are cheap and most countries are looking to cut carbon emissions to mitigate global warming.
