No industry gets as much love from President Donald Trump as the coal industry. Throughout his campaign and his presidency, Trump has pledged that he will revitalize the coal industry by stopping what he called President Barack Obama's brutal and cerebral "war on coal".
First of all, growing coal means jobs. Coal has provided one of the few well-paid jobs that workers with limited skills or education can obtain.
The resurgence of American coal would mean America was truly great again. Trump's focus on coal has paid off politically. In recent months, Trump and his administration have announced victory and significant production increases since founding in early 2016.
But Trump's claims are full of uncertainties. He didn't save coal. He didn't create many jobs. The president did not "save" coal - it was the market that temporarily pushed coal mining at the end of 2016 and 2017, and it is the market that will push it again this year and beyond. Trump is taking credit for an improvement that happened before he was elected. And he promises a future that he cannot deliver. He cannot force anyone to buy coal, except Ukraine, as the United States believes.
Brief US coal resurgence comes before Trump
