The world's largest steel group, ArcelorMittal, has announced plans to sell its Ostrava plant to the government in Prague. According to Czech newspapers, the company wants to get rid of Czech assets, because only in this way the European Commission will agree to buy the ArcelorMittal steel mills in Italy.
This is the ILVA plant in Taranto. According to Czech media, negotiations between ArcelorMittal and the government in Prague and the trade unions are not easy. The group's decision is very important. ArcelorMittal Ostrava (AMO) and its subsidiaries employ 14,000 people, making the company a key employer in the region.
The company annually produces over 2 million tons of steel, especially for the needs of construction and technology. They export their products to over 40 countries. In 2016, AMO achieved a net profit of 1.308 billion kroons, which is 1.017 billion more than a year earlier. The company's revenues fell by 1.807 billion to 28.786 billion kroons.
It is worth recalling that ArcelorMittal also owns factories on many continents.
