The White House has decided to close NASA's program to monitor carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. NASA's Carbon Monitoring System (CMS) research program focused on finding and monitoring sources of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere that are causing global warming. It cost $ 10 million a year.
"The administration of President Donald Trump silently killed CMS," NASA said in a press release, calling the decision "a serious attack on climatology." A NASA spokesman explained that the US president had proposed canceling the CMS and four other NASA science missions last year, but Congress ultimately decided to keep funding for the four missions while CMS did not provide funds.
According to a NASA spokesman, Donald Trump has always been skeptical about the topic of climate change, and during his election campaign he even called the problem "an invention of China." He recalled that the US president withdrew from the climate agreement adopted at the UN conference in Paris in 2015, and due to lack of funds, the launch of NASA's orbit - the orbiting carbon observatory-3 - was canceled into Earth's orbit.
Steve Cole explained that the elimination of this research program does not limit NASA's ability to control the impact of carbon dioxide on climate change. He said a new carbon monitoring tool, called GEDI, will launch on the International Space Station later this year.
