WTO postponed dispute over steel and aluminum tariffs

This year, WTO members, including the European Union, China and the United States, have faced controversy over new responsibilities justified on national security grounds. Each participant can block the initial call to the dispute procedure once - a fairly standard WTO maneuver - as a result of the submitted question, applications can be submitted at the next meeting in November.

This step creates the preconditions for the United States to abandon the Geneva WTO. The US disputes claims that its tariffs could undermine the international trading system. "This is wrong," US Deputy Trade Representative Dennis Shea said in a statement Monday. "What threatens the international trading system is that China is trying to use the WTO dispute settlement system to prevent any member from acting to resolve its unfair, trade distorting policies." Shi reiterated the US position that "national security issues are political in nature and have nothing to do with court decisions in the WTO dispute settlement system."

China, the EU, Canada, Mexico, Norway, Russia and Turkey have asked the WTO to investigate US tariffs in accordance with the October 19 WTO statement. And the US has been asked to reconsider the responses of Canada, China, the EU and Mexico.
