The EU-28 countries reported a jump in steel production in September 2018 from the previous year. The region is lagging behind global production growth. While global production rose 4.4% over the month, European production rose marginally by 0.2%. Statistics released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) show that annual production capacity rose marginally by 1.3% through September 18.
In September of this year, the volume of steel production in the EU-28 countries amounted to 13.945 million tons, compared with the production volume of 13.915 million tons in the same month a year earlier. Meanwhile, cumulative production for the first three quarters of 2018 recorded a moderate increase from 126.321 million tonnes in Jan-September 17 to 128.025 million tonnes.
The largest steel producing countries in the region were Germany, Italy and France. The aggregate volume of production in these countries was more than 52% of the total monthly output in the EU-28 countries. Production in Germany was 3.775 million tonnes, up 7.5% from the previous year. Italian production fell slightly from the previous year to 2.176 million tonnes. Meanwhile, steel production in France increased marginally by 1.4% year-on-year to 1.341 million tonnes.
Greece recorded the largest year-on-year production growth, while Austria reported a sharp decline.
