Metallurgical concerns are alarming that the costs of the European Union's climate policy could raise steel prices or even double them. This is why ArcelorMittal is pushing for a carbon offset charge at the EU borders. An alternative is to relocate steel production to countries where climate protection is not a priority, which affects not only the price of steel but also increases overall carbon dioxide emissions.
Technologies that reduce the carbon footprint of metallurgy are extremely expensive, which affects the prices of steel produced in Europe. In this situation, the maintenance of steel production on the continent requires legislative support.
ArcelorMittal is calling on Europe to introduce a carbon offset tax, which would ensure that steel imported into Europe will have the same CO2 standards as steel produced in Europe under the European Emissions Trading System (ETS). It would compensate for the shortfall in CO2 emissions from the importer. This instrument will help to effectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions and will prevent the competitiveness of the European steel industry from decreasing.
