The sharp decline in US exports is largely due to the high tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
A statement released by the Turkish Steel Exporters Association (CIB) indicates that the country surpassed the full 2018 steel export target in the first eleven months of the year. Exports increased 20% from the previous year to 19.3 Mt, exceeding the 2018 export target of 19 Mt.
In value terms, steel exports from Turkey in January-November 1918 amounted to $ 14.1 billion. This is significantly more than 37% higher than in the corresponding eleven-month period last year. The country's steel exports to the United States were estimated at $ 855 million, down 17.2% from 2017. It should be noted that exports to the United States from January to November 2017 totaled over $ 1 billion.
The sharp decline in US exports is largely due to the high tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Along with other countries, Turkey received 25% of tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminum imports. Later, this doubled the stakes for Turkey, following a diplomatic standoff between the two countries. Turkey has also responded by doubling the duty on several American goods.
Meanwhile, Turkey has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), challenging the additional tariffs imposed on it. Recent reports indicate that Turkey won its first WTO appeal against the United States.
