Steel production in Asia increased by 10%

China continued to be the leading steel producer in the region. Production growth in the country exceeded the growth in the region, increasing by 12.7% over the previous year.

The latest production statistics published by the World Steel Association (wordsteel) show a significant increase in crude steel production in Asian countries during April 2019. As the largest crude steel producing region, Asia accounted for nearly 72% of total global steel production during the month.

In April of this year, Asian countries increased their total production to 112.201 million tons, which is significantly higher (by 9.5%) compared to production in the same month a year earlier. In April 2018, production in the region was only 102.503 million tonnes. Cumulative production for the initial four-month period of this year rose 7.3% year-on-year to 424.029 million tonnes, up from 395.221 million tonnes in January-April 2018.

China continued to be the leading steel producer in the region. Production growth in the country exceeded the growth in the region, increasing by 12.7% over the previous year. The country accounted for about 76% of total regional production during the month. Production in China was 85.032 million tonnes. India continued to rank second, displacing Japan in third. Production in India was 8.785 million tons and in Japan - 8.647 million tons. Production in India increased marginally by 1.5%, while production in Japan decreased slightly by 0.8% compared to the same period last year.
