Tata Steel's Jamshedpur plant, which pioneered an eight-hour shift for workers in the country, will switch to an extended 12-hour schedule later this month to contain the spread of Covid-19. The company has received approval from the Jharkhand government authorizing the change, which requires a special exemption under labor law. Tata Steel said the proposed reorganization would minimize the number of people entering and /or exiting the plant at any given time, as well as limit the presence of large crowds in the shop floor.
Several other states have already allowed extended working hours during the lockdown, including Odisha, where Tata Steel operates two large steel mills such as Jamshedpur. The company then switched to a 12-hour shift at factories in Kalinganagar and Angula to limit the number of people in factories. These units have now basically gone back to the eight hour module.
