The Trump administration appears to be considering blacklisting China's largest chip maker. This will further exacerbate high-tech tensions between the United States and China.
The Defense Department said it is consulting with other government agencies to take action against Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp or SMIC. If SMIC were blacklisted, US companies could only do business with the Chinese chipmaker under a special license.
China's leading chip maker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) said on Saturday that it was "completely shocked and confused" by the US government's allegations. They did not violate any laws and have nothing to do with the Chinese military, SMIK said in a statement.
"However, SMIC is open to honest and transparent communication with US government agencies in the hope of resolving any potential misunderstandings."
