Within 25 years, blast furnaces will have to replace new technologies that are still in the research or pilot phase. In other words: the steel industry must be rebuilt from scratch over the next 25 years. Too little renewable energy throws us beyond the metallurgical future.
Direct downsizing of blast furnaces should be commissioned in 2025 - first using gas and then gradually using hydrogen.
Germany's “hydrogen” steel industry will need 130 TWh per year - half of the country's energy production last year.
In many EU countries there is no chance of direct use of energy from renewable sources, so the steel industry in these countries will largely disappear with blast furnaces.
Blast furnaces will disappear from Europe along with mines
