The World Steel Association (Worldsteel) released a report stating that Egypt was ranked 20th among the world's largest steel producers in 2020.
The report provides a comprehensive overview of the global steel industry, including facts on crude steel production, use and global trade flows.
“We have said many times that the steel industry is at the heart of the global economy and equally at the heart of our sustainable modern society. Despite the impact of the pandemic due to its various regional impacts, the global steel industry was fortunate enough to end 2020 with only a slight decrease in steel demand, ”said Edwin Basson, CEO of Worldsteel.
Basson added that the pandemic has accelerated some of the key trends that have led to shifts in steel demand. For example, the steel industry is expected to see new opportunities through rapid advancements in digitization and automation, infrastructure initiatives, urban restructuring and energy conversion.
The report notes that only China recorded an increase in steel use, while in the rest of the world, steel use declined.
Egypt ranked 20th in the world among the largest steel producing countries in 2020, becoming the only Arab country on the list with an output of 8.2 million tonnes of steel.
According to the report, the top producing countries in 2020 were China, India, Japan, USA, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, Germany, Brazil, Iran, Taiwan, Ukraine, Italy, Vietnam, Mexico, France, Spain, Canada, Indonesia and Egypt.
The steel industry is a cornerstone of Egypt's economic growth and has seen significant production growth in the past few years.
