European industry officials have warned that the EU must take action and ensure a stable supply of magnesium, as magnesium reserves will be depleted by the end of November, jeopardizing the production of various industries, including the steel industry.
The global annual demand for magnesium is 1.2 million tons. Magnesium production in China is 87% and consumption is 39%. Consumption in the iron and steel industry in Europe accounts for 16% of total consumption. Aluminum alloy and die casting account for 45% and 33% respectively.
Magnesium shipments to China have been suspended or cut sharply since September due to a power outage. 95% of the EU's magnesium needs come from China. EU industry representatives jointly issued an appeal to the European Commission and the governments of various countries to organize emergency cooperation with China in order to reduce the serious shortage of magnesium and reduce the impact on the magnesium supply chain for the European industry.
