The Russian company Nornickel, the world's largest palladium producer, has announced a competition among scientists for new ways to use palladium. Global demand for palladium has slowed recently as carmakers that use the metal as a catalyst to reduce pollution have closed their operations.
“We believe palladium has enormous potential beyond automotive catalysts. “We see opportunities for its use in other global industries, including the green economy and decarbonization,” Anton Berlin, head of sales for Nornikiel, said in a statement.
The organizers of the competition, known as the Palladium Challenge, give away a total of 350,000 people. dollars to scientists or entrepreneurs who have come up with a sustainable way to increase the demand for palladium.
As the Supreme Mining Authority points out in its review of developments in the mining industry, the award will be presented in the second half of 2022 and split between the top three projects. Proposals are accepted until the end of May 2022.
