Across India, there is a severe shortage of electricity: coal stocks at thermal power plants have fallen to a nine-year low. In addition, demand for electricity grew at the fastest rate in 38 years, affecting industrial operations.
As a result, coal stocks at thermal power plants in India fell to 9-day consumption equivalent, in violation of the standard for maintaining coal stocks of at least 24-day consumption equivalent.
Power shortages and frequent power outages began to affect industrial production.
Kia India's plant in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh said the power shortfall was 8.5% of normal demand. Ferrochromium producer FACOR also said its production had fallen by 50% due to power shortages and blackouts.
