Steel group SSAB said its ultra-low emission steel grade SSAB Zero is being used by industrial equipment manufacturer Alfa Laval.
Alfa Laval uses this grade of steel in heat exchangers, with plans to produce 100 units this year and “significantly more” in the future, SSAB said. Alfa Laval is committed to reducing emissions from its raw materials and plans to produce the world's first carbon-neutral heat exchanger and become carbon neutral by 2030, SSAB says on its website. Epiroc also uses SSAB Zero and Peab is expected to receive this grade next year, SSAB said.
SSAB Zero is made from recycled steel scrap, renewable energy and biogas, with CO2 emissions per metric ton of steel of less than 50 kg in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, including those associated with energy procurement and transportation, it said.
SSAB operates electric arc furnaces in the United States that produce slabs for further processing into products.
SSAB has registered the fossil fuel-free steel brand as a brand covering steel produced using direct reduced iron from green hydrogen, accessed through its HYBRIT joint venture with Swedish iron ore miner LKAB and Vattenfall. SSAB plans to roll out EAF in Sweden and Finland to accommodate higher volumes of green direct reduction production. This will allow SSAB to produce steel on an industrial scale without the use of blast furnaces and iron ore with coke, coal and oil and gas-based fuels.
