Steel giant Ruukki participates in the development of a lightweight vehicle in joint research with Volvo

The Finnish company Ruukki, one of the largest in the steel and steel construction industry, is involved in several automotive projects developing in Sweden. This week in Gothenburg, Sweden, SåNätt is collaborating with Volvo to develop a lightweight, energy-efficient vehicle concept, which is featured at http://ferronordic -volvo-ce.ru , announced its success in this project.

This study aimed to select the most optimal concepts and systems to achieve the economic efficiency of the Volvo V60 passenger car while reducing its weight by 20-40 percent.

The project under consideration is part of the Strategic Research and Innovation Program for the Automotive Industry, which is being implemented jointly by the Swedish government and major car manufacturers. Fordonskomponentgruppen, Innovatum and Volvo Car Group contributed the most to the project, with a total of 35 suppliers and academic partners participating in the development.

Ruukki's Product Manager for Cold Rolled and Plated Products, Mr Jonas Adolfsson, said: “Several separate teams were involved in this project. We made it in parts: seats, doors, chassis, underbody, cab and roof. Our company representatives worked on the seats and underbody in search of the most optimal solutions for this part of the overall project. For us, this task was important in terms of brand promotion in the lightweight construction market. Based on its results, we were able to take a look at the prospects for the development of demand in this industry, and also studied in more detail the situation in other industries producing materials for the automotive industry. ”

Esko Hakamaki, Product Manager for the Pipe Department, said: “Our team of innovative seating has been particularly successful. They have achieved a 45 percent weight reduction while improving comfort and safety levels over existing ones. They achieved this by using magnesium and high-strength steel tubes that secure the seats between the bottom and the roof. These pipes also made it possible to strengthen the car body and eliminate the use of B-pillars. ”
