Features of metalworking on CNC machines

Особенности металлообработки на станках с ЧПУ

Equipping metalworking machines with a CNC unit allows, on the one hand, to significantly speed up the processing of parts from any metal. On the other hand, a much more complex mechanism tends to deteriorate more often, requiring carefully calibrated settings and special attention to the quality of the processed parts. And the rule - the more parts, the higher the risk of breakage - has not been canceled, although in the case of a numerically controlled unit, the probability of failures is no less great than in a conventional machine, which is controlled manually. Nevertheless, manufacturing parts on CNC machines turns out to be much faster than manual processing, assuming, ideally, a much lower percentage of scrap and allows for more subtle work.

Interestingly, many people think that CNC machines break down much more often. The reason for this opinion is simple to the point of banality: most of this kind of units are equipped with a system for indicating malfunctions. The slightest malfunction (deviation from the parameters set by the program, an increase in tolerances, etc.) causes a corresponding signal on the display of the program control unit, or even an automatic shutdown of the unit's operation - on a conventional machine, deviations "from the norm" would simply not be noticeable.

Compensatory capabilities of CNC machining

The task of any metalworking machine is reduced to making a product that has (with minor deviations) certain dimensions. In turn, the machining accuracy is determined by the step of the machine settings - with CNC machining is more accurate precisely due to the fact that the program that controls the process of processing a part or workpiece compensates for a too large step of machine settings: from gaps - the result of inaccurate adjustment of unit parts - to changes in the dimensions of parts due to heating or cooling during and, accordingly, at the beginning of work.

Similarly, the production of parts on CNC machines is adjusted depending on the nature of the workpiece - here the range of permissible standard sizes is very significant, as well as the surface quality of the workpiece and its texture.

Setting up CNC machines

No matter how perfect the program, "hardwired" into the numerical control unit, is required before the first start-up of the machine. Most often it is produced in the factory, but it is not uncommon - especially when it comes to multifunctional machines - when the operator has to do the setting himself, right at the workplace.

The primary is carried out during a dry run, during which the CNC software determines how inaccurate the machine is. Secondary - before each cycle of work on a new part. However, the latter does not always make sense: if the CNC already has an algorithm for working with a part.

The diagnostic capabilities of the software, as well as automatic control of the work - all this guarantees that CNC machining of any metal part will be done as accurately and quickly as possible.
