The next European Football Championship will take place in 2020. Abbreviated as Euro 2020. This continental championship will differ markedly from previous trophy draws.
Firstly, teams that could hardly get there through direct qualification will be able to get to the final part of Euro 2020. This became possible thanks to the "League of Nations" tournament. There the rally is divided into 4 leagues - depending on the strength of the teams. The winners of all these leagues will make it to the final part of the draw.
Thanks to this tournament, such teams as, for example, Belarus, Georgia or Macedonia have real chances to reach the final stage. The recently published Euro 2020 Core Qualification Table suggests that these teams are unlikely to be able to impose competition on the giants of European football.
Also, UEFA decided to leave the number of participants the same as it was in the last Euro draw. Then the number of teams in the final part was expanded from 16 to 24.
Venue
The previous European championship took place in 2016. France took the championship by UEFA decision. Then the Portuguese national team lifted the cup over their heads, beating the French national team in a dramatic final of the hosts, scoring a goal in the second extra half.
The new Euro draw is held in a completely new format. If earlier the championship was hosted by 1-2 countries, then the European Championship in 2020 will be held in 12 countries at once, in 12 cities. Some matches of the final part of Euro 2020 will be held in Russia. Thanks to this, Russians will be able to re-experience the atmosphere of a great football holiday, as it was at the 2018 World Cup. European championship matches will be held in St. Petersburg. Several group stage games will be played here, as well as one of the quarterfinals.
The final stage of Euro 2020 starts on June 12. The opening match will be held at Wembley Stadium in London. Exactly one month later, the two strongest teams in Europe will find out who will become the champion of the continent. In addition, the winning team will receive € 10 million in prize money.
