Indeed, a typical conveyor transports cargo in a straight line, sometimes with a slight slope. Transporters almost unlimited in turns , angle of inclination and are capable of vertical lifting of loads. Such properties are provided by the special quality of the mechanisms.
Postal workers were the first to use transporters
Now few people will remember that pneumatic mail at one time almost supplanted courier delivery. Pipes were laid everywhere, mail delivery was almost instantaneous, but there was a difficulty - sorting in case of redirecting a tube with a letter. Then the first conveyor appeared in the full sense of the word, about two kilometers of tape, stretching over three floors of the post office in Washington.
Moving the load horizontally does not cause problems, but with a steep climb, something needs to be done, and the Americans, without hesitation, connected three mechanisms at once:
- The bucket-like ribbon prevented the letter cylinders from rolling down;
- On the horizontal sections, not a flat ribbon was used, but a concave one (then roller garlands were invented);
- A shaft with an Archimedes propeller was used for vertical lift.
The technology of such mail delivery did not receive distribution, although it competed with the telegraph in speed, and the developments of that time firmly entered our life. But without tough tool steels, new materials and the advancements of engineers, such multi-lane conveyors would have remained in history. A copper cylinder with paper weighs a little, and time required moving much larger and heavier loads.
Mine roller support increased lifting height to 450 meters
Ukraine is undoubtedly one of the largest coal-mining powers, and at some point the task arose to quickly and reliably raise mined coal to the surface. In the USSR, they did not attach importance to the task, they laid the tracks for trolleys in the old fashioned way, so the specific task was solved by Ukrainian engineers.
The first mine lifts were installed in 1940, but for obvious reasons they were launched only in 1944, during the period of economic recovery. Even then, the main operations were automated:
- Continuously feeding horizontally with conveyor belts;
- Transfer to buckets (in automatic mode) at the sort point;
- Ascent to the surface with a mine conveyor;
- Unloading onto a belt with the delivery of coal to the storage site or for loading into wagons.
