ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe modernizes converter shop

The converter shop and production facilities are being modernized at the company's steel plant in Deisburg-Bruckhausen, which has been in operation since 1969. As part of the project, the enterprise replaced chillers air conditioning systems and completely reconstructed the equipment of the converter shop and waste heat boiler.

Chris Lindner, shop manager at ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe, explaining the technical and organizational tasks of the project, said: “We are removing old equipment and installing new equipment, while neighboring converters are operating as usual, and at the same time we are doing work on two levels: at the converter itself and on the waste heat boiler system, which is located almost 70 meters above the converter ".

The new converter bowl is one of the largest of its kind in the entire world, with a height and diameter of eleven meters and a weight of about 500 tons. The fine-grained structural steel for the converter was produced at ThyssenKrupp Steel. Thanks to the new construction method, the converter will be much wider. With a constant loading weight of up to 400 tons, its internal volume will be increased from 218 to 270 cubic meters. meters.

The additional capacity added allows for cleaner operation and more efficient energy recovery. The scope of work associated with the replacement of equipment is enormous. The rings were made by equipment manufacturer Siemag in Italy. From there, they were transported in several stages to the steel plant in Brookhausen in April 2013. ThyssenKrupp specialists installed massive elements in the workshops.
