Colombia miners to end strike after 6-week protest

The striking miners of the Colombian mine, owned by the industrial company Drummond Co., may end the protest and resume their duties by early next week. This decision was made by the miners after successful negotiations on higher wages, which the local trade union held with the management of the enterprise.

“The strike at the Drummond mine has been going on for over six weeks. From September 3rd to 5th, the workers had to decide to end the protest action, ”said Dionisio Machuca, who holds the post of chairman of the miners' union at the enterprise.

Dionisio Machuca also added that the strike will end immediately after the relevant documents from Drummond Co. will go to the Ministry of Labor. This should happen on Monday, so the miners intend to resume work no earlier than next week.

The workers went on strike at the Drummond mine on July 23 this year. This thermal coal mine is the second largest in Colombia. It accounts for 29 percent of the total coal mined. In 2012, the company produced 26 million tons of raw materials. Colombia's coal is second only to oil in terms of exports.

The decision to end the strike and resume work next week was confirmed by other negotiators representing the interests of the miners, including Alfredo Moreno, chairman of the Mining Workers' Union, and Cesar Flores, who mediated between the company and the miners in the negotiations.
