ArcelorMittal recently approved a € 18 million investment to modernize the continuous casting line at its Industeel plant in Charleroi, Belgium, including new stars for drive chains of lifting equipment. The new line will allow Industeel to produce slabs up to 355 mm thick and up to 2.2 meters long.
The investment project will create 40 new jobs at the Charleroi plant. Alex Nick, CEO of Industeel, said that "The investment project confirms ArcelorMittal's commitment to treat Industeel in Belgium as a strategic business entity."
The new line will strengthen ArcelorMittal's leadership in the steel market for the energy sector and will provide customers with products at a very competitive price. The retrofit project, known as CC355, will increase the maximum board thickness at the Charleroi plant from 300mm to 355mm and the maximum length from 2,100mm to 2,200mm.
These large slabs will later be used to produce heavy slabs with a thickness of 125 mm and an impressive 20 tons each. The product is the choice of customers for boilers in the construction sector. The investment will also improve the position of stainless steel by raising the upper elastic limit and molds of the sector in the production of sheets with a thickness of 150 mm and 175 mm.
The design of the new line was developed in collaboration with ArcelorMittal's R&D Maizieres Process and R&D Metallurgy Le Creusot research centers that integrate the latest generation technologies, ensuring that production meets strict safety and quality requirements.
