The official policy of the new government will be able to turn the dream of increasing annual steel production to 300 million tons by 2025 into reality. Indian Metallurgy Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said at a recent conference that the government is working hard in this direction. Although there are many critics who constantly argue that this process is impossible, given that India only produces 82 million tonnes per year of finished products.
Speaking at the conference, he said that the new policy implemented by the government will focus mainly on three issues related to raw material security, land acquisition, and environmental issues.
To achieve this target by 2025, the minister and his departments must begin now to address issues of providing the steel industry with raw materials. Due to the lack of domestic raw materials, the country should soon become the largest importer of iron ore.
In the last fiscal year alone, India had to import a third of the iron ore used, but this year, according to government figures, metallurgical companies will have to import twice as much. This was announced by the chairman of the National Steel Committee, CS Verma at the Steel Summit. He said that many things are holding the country back from reaching its full potential. Some of these factors are the high cost of logistics as well as the unavailability of raw materials.
