CIS steel production fell sharply in August 2014

According to the latest data released by the World Steel Association, steel production in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) decreased by 6.5 percent during the month of August compared to last year, due to a decrease in output in Ukraine.

Total crude steel production in Belarus rose 46.0 percent in August this year to 225,000 tons, up from 154,000 tons in August 2013. Kazakhstan produced 280,000 tonnes of steel, an increase of 17.7 percent from 238,000 tonnes achieved in August 2013. Moldova recorded 40,000 tons of steel production in a month. The total volume of crude steel production in Russia in August this year decreased by 5.8 percent to 5.833 million tons compared to August 2013 from 6.169 million tons.

A sharp decline in steel production in August was noted in Ukraine. Total steel production in Ukraine decreased by 37.0 percent to 1.767 million tonnes in August 2014, compared with an output of 2.804 million tonnes in August last year. In addition, steel production decreased slightly in Uzbekistan. The fall was 0.8 percent during the month of August this year.

The cumulative volume of steel production in the first eight months of 2014 compared to the same period in 2013 in Belarus is 1,651 thousand tons (an increase of 0.1 percent), in Kazakhstan 2,372 thousand tons (an increase of 16.6 percent), in Moldova 272 thousand tons (an increase of 561.5 percent), in Russia 47506 thousand tons (an increase of 2.8 percent), in Ukraine 19703 thousand tons (a drop of 11.4 percent), in Uzbekistan 514 thousand tons (0 percent).
