The new stainless steel product can be used as special pipes for reactors, through which seawater and hot steam, which is generated during the cooling of a nuclear reactor, pass. This steam will then be used to rotate the turbine to generate electricity.
POSCO stated that the stainless steel was developed under the guidance of Professor Park Young Soo and Yonsei University. The company also focuses on the fact that for the first time in the country a stainless steel product has been created that can be used in a nuclear reactor. In addition, the material will be in demand by companies whose main activity is making crates and can be used in systems designed to remove sulfur from fossil fuels of thermal power plants and reverse osmosis systems of large desalination plants.
The fact is that South Korea is one of the largest consumers of nuclear energy, but the country still has to import non-aggressive stainless steel from Japan and Europe to meet the needs of the reactors. The development of special stainless steels will enable the country to build its own turbine condenser.
The company said the first condenser built from stainless steel developed by Korean scientists will be a condenser manufactured by Hyundai Heavy Industries, based in the United Arab Emirates. The company also said the country would no longer need to import materials needed for their nuclear reactors. In addition, it will be possible to export these products from the country.
