The world leader in rolled aluminum production, Novelis, has officially opened the world's largest recycling center for secondary aluminum at Nachterstedt, which is located next to the company's German rolling mill.
The recycling center, worth $ 258 million, is expected to be able to process about 400,000 tons of aluminum scrap per year. This recycled aluminum will be processed as high value aluminum ingots.
Phil Martens, President and CEO of Novelis, said that the implementation of this processing unit will act as the first milestone in the company's strategy to become a low-carbon production facility. A sheet aluminum producer plans to buy metalworking equipment and move the company's business from a traditional model to a closed loop regime. He also announced that the company will add prestigious recycling centers for aluminum scrap in North America, Asia and South America. And in the near future the company should become the world leader in recycled aluminum.
Novelis has invested a total of $ 500 million since 2011 in the expansion of its recycling centers. During this time period, the company doubled its capacity and also raised its use of recycled materials from 30 to 46 percent. The main goal of Novelis today is to achieve 80 percent of the metal from the recycling unit by 2020 in the total volume of aluminum, which will provide energy savings as well as reduce various emissions from conventional aluminum production.
