In September 2014, the Swedish steelmaker SSAB entered into an agreement with the German company SMS SIEMAG to modernize its cold rolling mill at its Borlange site. The rolling mill, supplied by SMS, has been in operation since 1970, and the last reconstruction in 2004 was also carried out by the company.
The cold rolling mill has an annual capacity of over 1.2 million tonnes of steel strips ranging from 600 to 1550 mm wide and with a final thickness of up to 0.32 mm. In order to increase production efficiency while improving product quality and performance, SMS will supply new mechanical systems that include roll lubrication, roll cooling and wiper systems.
Preparatory work for the reconstruction will begin shortly, and the entire scope of work is planned to be carried out during the regular shutdown in the summer of 2015 in mid-August. As a result, SSAB will receive a renewed cold rolling mill in Borland that meets modern standards.
The installation of the equipment will also be carried out by SMS SIEMAG AG, which is an SMS group company belonging to SMS Holding GmbH. The holding brings together groups of global players in the field of equipment projects for the production and processing of steel and non-ferrous metals. It has a workforce of over 13,800 employees and generates worldwide sales of 3.5 billion euros per year.
