Exports of scrap metal from the US fell sharply during September this year, according to the latest data released by the US International Trade Commission. Exports have reached their lowest level since January this year.
According to this data, exports of scrap metal during the month amounted to 1.16 million tons, which is 24.7 percent lower compared to exports for the same month last year, when US exports amounted to 1.54 million tons.
In addition, the export of ferrous metal scrap in the country fell by 26.1 percent compared to the previous month, since in August this year the total volume of exports amounted to 1.57 million tons.
However, US exports of scrap metal to Turkey increased in September 2014 from 321,000 tonnes in the previous month. Scrap exports to Turkey totaled 370,000 tonnes during September, accounting for nearly one third of the total US scrap during the month.
The second largest export destination for scrap metal from the United States was Taiwan. American scrap exports to Taiwan totaled 199,000 tons. South Korea was the third largest importer of American scrap with 108,000 tonnes.
Cumulative exports of scrap metal during the first nine months of the year were 11.58 million tonnes, down 19.4 percent from the country's exports during the corresponding nine months in 2013. The projected export of scrap throughout the country for the entire 2014 is 15.44 million tons.
