Scrap metal imports to Turkey fell slightly

The latest data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) reports that imports of scrap metal into the country fell 1.6 percent in the ten months of this year, compared to imports between January and October last year. In January-October 2014, Europe was the largest exporter of scrap metal to Turkey. The imports of ferrous scrap to the country from Europe reached 8.8 million tons, which is more than half of the total imports from Turkey during this period. The second largest source of Turkish scrap metal imports was the United States. During the reporting period, the country's scrap imports from the United States amounted to 3.25 million tons. The third place was taken by the CIS. Exports of scrap metal to Turkey from the CIS totaled 3.2 million tons.

In monetary terms, Turkey's scrap metal imports declined 2.4 percent in ten months compared to the same period last year. Total imports for the ten-month period in 2014 amounted to $ 6.15 billion, compared with $ 6.30 billion in the corresponding ten months last year. The decline is associated not only with a reduction in import supplies, but also with a periodic decline in scrap prices this year.
