Global industrial silver demand is set to rise 27 percent, adding an additional 142 million ounces to silver demand in 2018 from current levels, according to a new report released by the International Silver Institute.
Most of this growth will come from the needs of the instrument making, electrical and electronics industries, but additional demand will come from other industries as well, as highlighted in the report, "Industrial Silver Glitter."
Silver's unique properties - excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, as well as its ductility and optical reflectance - make it indispensable in many industries, from watch batteries to industrial scale solar energy applications.
Increasingly, devices are being invented that use silver, which is important for commercialization. The report outlines some of the most important growth potentials for the industrial use of silver.
Increased demand for silver in solar panels, automobiles, bearings and batteries, and ethylene oxide. These trends have influenced silver consumption in developed and developing countries to varying degrees. In recent years, industrial demand for silver has shifted from one key geographic location to another.
Increased use of silver has been driven by increased consumption in China and India, and this trend is likely to continue.
The development of the electrical and electronic sector will significantly increase the demand for silver by 2018
