According to the latest statistics released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), imports of steel billets into the country during the month of October this year fell by 35 percent compared to the previous month. However, imports have increased compared to last year.
Turkish factories, based on the prices for scrap metal and billets, choose a more advantageous offer, moving from one type of raw material to another. This explains the unevenness of imports. According to Turkey's statistics, total imports of steel billets in October 2014 were 168,973 tons, down 34.7 percent from imports in the previous month, when the country's imports were 258,764 tons.
Compared to October 2013, imports during the same month were 20.4 percent higher. The country's imports in October last year totaled 140,343 tons. The total value of imports of steel billets was $ 94.07 million for the month, an increase of 19.2 percent over the previous year. The volume of imports decreased by 33.46 percent compared to the previous month.
During the initial ten-month period of this year, imports of steel billets to Turkey amounted to 2,410,000 tons, a decrease of only 0.51 percent over the corresponding period last year. Total imports in monetary terms during January-October 2014 fell by 3.2 percent year on year to $ 1.3 billion.
