Secondary copper production increased by 12 percent

The latest data released by the International Copper Research Group (ICSG) shows a significant increase in the production of refined copper from scrap during 2014. The output from the processing of scrap copper during the three quarters of 2014 was 3.113 million tonnes, up almost 12 percent compared to the output of 2.783 million tonnes during the corresponding period in 2013.

Global primary copper production increased by 7.5 percent during the reporting period. ICSG data also indicates that global refined copper production jumped nearly 8 percent year-on-year to 16.815 million tonnes, up from 15.52 million tonnes in the corresponding three quarters of 2013.

The global demand for copper products increased significantly in 2014. The increase was over 11 percent to 17.394 million tons. The copper market came to a deficit of 578,000 tons. At the same time, the copper deficit in 2014 increased compared to the deficit of 133,000 tons recorded in 2013.

ICSG notes that robust demand from China has boosted production. Chinese demand grew 19 percent during this period. Refined copper imports in that country also saw a sharp rise of 20 percent.

Global copper production capacity utilization averaged 81 percent in 2014. This is slightly higher than the 78 percent recorded during 2013.
