According to the latest statistics released by the World Steel Association, steel production from the 65 member countries reached 1,636.960 million tonnes in 2014, a slight increase of 1.1 percent over 2013 production.
The total steel production of the EU-28 countries during 2014 was 169.243 million tons, which is 1.8 percent higher than the production of 166.311 tons in 2013. Other European countries smelted 36.194 million tonnes of crude steel, down 0.8 percent from a production of 36.477 million tonnes achieved in 2013.
CIS steel production declined 2.8 percent to 105.089 million tons from 108.083 million tons in the previous year. Moreover, in Belarus, Kazakhstan and Moldova, steel output increased during 2014. The negative result of the CIS was caused by a sharp decline in steel production in Ukraine.
Total crude steel production in North America increased 2.0 percent in 2014 to 121.247 million tonnes, up from 118.876 million tonnes in 2013. Total steel production in the South American region in 2014 fell 1.4 percent to 45.201 million tonnes.
African countries smelted 15.579 million tonnes of steel, down 0.7 percent from the production of 15.694 million tonnes achieved in 2013. Total crude steel production in the Middle East in 2014 reached 28.059 Mt, up 7.9 percent from 26.007 2013 Mt in 2013.
