China's municipal authorities are planning to build a 7,000 kilometer railroad between Moscow and Beijing worth $ 1.5 trillion. yuan ($ 242 billion). China is about to showcase its high-speed rail technology internationally for the first time.
The 7000 km railway line should facilitate transportation in Europe and Asia, as well as communication between neighboring countries. The government press center, answering journalists' questions, said that the proposed cross-border high-speed railway will pass through the territory of three countries - China, Kazakhstan and Russia. The trip from Beijing to Moscow on the route through Kazakhstan will take two days. The journey currently takes six days.
The Beijing-Moscow high-speed rail project was proposed during the official visit of Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang to Russia in October 2014. At the 19th China-Russia meeting, an agreement was reached on the creation of a Eurasian high-speed transport corridor linking Beijing and Moscow.
China's plans to build a railroad emerged amid chilly relations between the United States, Europe and Russia amid the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and the Russian economy's desire to cope with falling oil prices. The railway project was approved by the parties after Russia and China last year agreed on a deal for the largest natural gas supply.
China is also betting on increasing shipments of its high-speed rail equipment overseas, including India, as part of its new economic restructuring program to cope with a slowdown in the economy, which slowed growth last year to its lowest level in 24 years.
