The Malaysian authorities have ended an anti-dumping investigation against the import of rebar from China and South Korea. The preliminary investigation concluded that the rods were imported at fair prices and that these imports did not impede the domestic production of rebar in the country. The investigation has been halted, according to the federal government.
An investigation was launched on complaints filed by Malaysian Ann Joo Steel after steel imports from China rose significantly last year. The company argued that the increase in rebar imports from other countries, especially China and South Korea, hurt domestic steel producers in the country, as these products are imported at a rather low price. The Malaysian government decree disappointed local metallurgists. On the other hand, Chinese exporters welcomed the decision.
The investigation was carried out on rebar HS 7214 and 7228 up to 6 meters in length. Chinese and Korean import prices were within 1 percent of what is considered fair domestically, according to Malaysian authorities. In addition, it was not possible to find that the material damage caused to domestic producers is directly related to the import of these products. The investigation was even extended by 30 days, and the decision was issued a day before the expiration of the extended period.
By the way, imports of Chinese finished steel products to Malaysia grew by more than 50.5 percent during 2014 and amounted to 93.78 million tons.
