Global battery giant Energizer has launched new Energizer AA disposable batteries made in part from recycled battery materials. The new battery, named "EcoAdvanced", is the first such attempt by a leading brand to help reduce its environmental impact.
According to Energizer, the batteries will contain 4 percent recycled battery materials. They are able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 7 percent compared to other disposable batteries. However, new batteries cost almost 25 percent more than traditional high performance batteries. A pack of 4 batteries will cost around $ 5, according to the company.
The company has spent nearly seven long years of research on the project. The end result is EcoAdvanced reusing zinc and manganese from discarded alkaline batteries. Michelle Atkinson, director of marketing for Energizer, says that very few recyclers currently process these batteries and mostly throw them in the trash. The company hopes more recyclers will start recycling batteries. The company plans to increase its share of recycled materials to 40 percent by 2025.
EcoAdvanced batteries last longer than traditional alkaline batteries, thereby reducing the amount of batteries thrown into the trash. World's first AA batteries made with recyclable batteries. With their launch, Energizer introduced a new use of recycled materials.
