Aluminum slag can replace cement in concrete

Research conducted at the University of Qatar suggests a partial substitution of aluminum slag in concrete for cement. The project, initiated by the Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), could give new life to the huge volumes of aluminum slag that are currently in landfills. The use of aluminum slag will lead to cost-effective and environmentally friendly concrete structures.

The design team at CAM claims the product identified in the study will help reduce the final cure time of concrete by up to 48 percent. In addition, it will reduce the corrosion of the reinforcing steel used in concrete by more than 50 percent, resulting in an increase in the strength of these structures.

The use of aluminum slags contributes to an ideal combination for use in screeds, blocks and pre-formed panels. In addition to reducing the cost of concrete and saving time, reducing the use of cement will reduce the level of pollution caused by cement production. In general, the process significantly reduces environmental pollution.

The project is being implemented in accordance with the fundamental principles of the Qatar 2030 National Strategy. This ensures that aluminum waste is used for useful products, thereby reducing the impact on the environment.
