CIS steel production falls in January

Steel production in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) declined 3.1 percent during January 2015 compared to January last year, according to the latest data released by the World Steel Association. The region's steel output was 8,526,000 tonnes in January this year, up from 8,801,000 tonnes in the same month a year earlier.

The total volume of crude steel production in Belarus increased by 29.8 percent in January this year and amounted to 219 thousand tons, compared with 169 thousand tons in January 2014. Kazakhstan produced 230 thousand tons of steel, which is significantly lower compared to 287 thousand tons of production achieved in January last year. The fall was 19.7 percent.

Steel production in Russia increased by 6.0 percent to 6,130 thousand tons in January 2015. compared to 5,781 thousand tons in January 2014. The total volume of unrefined steel production in Moldova amounted to 22 thousand tons of steel during the month.

There was a decline in crude steel production in Ukraine throughout January. The total steel production in Ukraine dropped sharply to 1,874,000 tonnes in January 2015, compared with an output of 2,506,000 tonnes in January 2014. The fall was 22.2 percent. In addition, the steel output of Uzbekistan fell sharply by 13.0 percent during the month from 59 thousand tons to 51 thousand tons.
