TATA Steel has announced the signing of a prestigious contract for the supply of highly wear-resistant rails for the Crossrail project in the heart of London. The Crossrail route will serve 40 stations and will run more than 100 kilometers from Heathrow in the west, through a new 21 kilometer tunnel below central London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.
TATA Steel has already begun deliveries for the Crossrail project, and should ultimately provide more than 57 kilometers of wear-resistant rails. A total of 7,000 tonnes of TATA Steel products will be used to build one of the largest rail and infrastructure projects in Europe. During 2015, the main work will be done on railway systems in tunnels and at stations.
Gerard Glace, Head of Rail Sector for Tata Steel, said that “The Crossrail project has a huge impact on improving transport connections in London and we are delighted to be a part of it. Our rail heat treatment is performed using a unique patented process that guarantees exceptional wear resistance.” He said that “Instead of using traditional heating and cooling methods, TATA Steel has developed a system that uses an electromagnetic field to heat steel to 950 ° C, when the rail products pass through induction furnaces, then the rail is quickly cooled with compressed air. , low residual stresses provide additional protection against the risk of rail breakdowns compared to other heat treatment methods. "
The steel will be produced in the UK at Tata Steel in Scunthorpe and rolled at the company's plant in Hayange in northern France. Mike Greenwood, Crossrail Project Director, said he was delighted that TATA Steel won the rail contract and looked forward to their participation in the world-class rail project. "
