MMK becomes a supplier of rolled metal products for Ford in Russia

OJSC Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant announced that it is named as a supplier of rolled metal for Ford vehicles produced in Russia. MMK is successfully completing the process of accepting sheet steel from Ford Sollers Holding. The Russian automaker Ford expects to increase the supply of auto sheet. MMK also expects that several of the ultra-low carbon steel positions used in the production of the Ford Kuga and Ford Explorer will be adopted. In addition, the company aims to provide the automotive manufacturer with high-density micro-alloy steels and zinc-coated duplex steels, as well as uncoated cold rolled products.

MMK and Ford Sollers Holding have been cooperating in the production of automotive sheet metal since 2010. The collaboration is based on the phased acceptance of the metal. During the first stage, the automaker receives special sheets, which it plans to purchase from MMK. The documentation includes a complete overview of the current production of each steel grade, including its main technical and operational characteristics.

If approved, Ford will place an order for a small pilot batch, typically less than 5 tonnes. If the pilot batch gets positive feedback, then Ford places an order for a larger pilot batch. Subject to the approval of this pilot batch, the parties agree on commercial supplies of the accepted metal.
