Worldsteel demands effective water management by local organizations

The World Steel Association (Worldsteel) has published a report on water management in the steel industry. The association argues that efficient water management is a top priority for the industry. Worldsteel believes that local regulators play a key role in this and must take into account the prevailing local conditions.

The CEO of Worldsteel believes that the steel industry has a high responsibility for inefficient water management. The steel industry should be involved in the development of tools for assessing water use. In addition, the industry must prioritize the conservation and reuse of water. Although the industry uses large amounts of water, very little is actually consumed. This is because almost 90 percent of the water used in the metallurgical industry is purified, cooled and returned to the source.

The report notes that targets may differ from region to region and from country to country. As a result, the regulatory approach of local authorities should be adopted as the best solution. In regions with sufficient water availability and in those where it is scarce, recycling and reuse of available water has different implications. Developing a water management policy that is responsive to local conditions should help improve the efficiency of water use in the steel industry.
