Mechel, one of the largest mining and metallurgical companies in Russia, has certified rails up to 100 meters long. The received certificate confirms compliance with the requirements of the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union. The document enables the company to supply the Russian Railways (RZD) with rails produced at the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (ChMK).
The Register for Certification on Federal Railway Transport issued the company a corresponding document based on the results of tests and production checks. The tests were carried out at the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Railway Transport (VNIIZhT) and took place in several stages. For six months, the prototypes of ChMK rails at the experimental test site were rolled with a load of 150 million ton-kilometers. As a result of successful tests, the conformity of the products of the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Combine to the leading world analogues was confirmed in all respects.
These products are produced by the rail and structural mill at ChMK, which has the ability to produce up to 1.1 million tons per year. High operational properties of rails and structural shapes are achieved thanks to a unique heat treatment technology, which increases the endurance limit, wear resistance and strength. The volume of investments in the project exceeds $ 900 million.
According to Valentin Gapanovich, Chief Engineer of Russian Railways, the quality of ChMK's products is not only not inferior to foreign counterparts, but also surpasses in some indicators, which was confirmed by laboratory and field tests. In addition, the production of rails at the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant contributes to the further implementation of the import substitution program and the strengthening of the transport infrastructure.
Mechel CEO Oleg Korzhov said that the received certificate of conformity for the rails can be considered an event of strategic importance for the company. Confirmation of the successful passing of the tests will ensure cooperation with JSC Russian Railways, which guarantees a high utilization of the capacity of the universal rail and structural mill at the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. Oleg Korzhov highlighted the contribution of Gazprombank OJSC, UniCredit and BNP Paribas, as well as the export agency of Germany, the Czech Republic and Italy, which provided financing for the Mechel project.
