The new pollution control policy will increase the cost of energy for smelters if they fail to meet the new stringent emission standards within the next three months.
This means that steel prices may have a good chance of increasing at these smelters. As a result, billet prices in Tangshan have risen by as much as $ 10 per tonne over the past few days, and this is not expected to be the limit, as steel prices should move higher in the near future.
Compliance with the new regulations for the Tangshan smelters means that 29 companies in the steel sector will have to upgrade a total of 104 blast furnaces and converters and 182,22 sintering plants by the end of October. This will lead to higher prices, as huge investments will be required to modernize this pollution equipment.
