MMK strengthens its position as a supplier of automotive metal products

Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) in the first six months of 2015 increased the supply of steel products to enterprises in the automotive sector by 20 percent compared to the first half of last year. Auto deliveries totaled 215,000 tonnes.

Despite the prolonged decline in the Russian automotive industry, MMK's metallurgists were able to strengthen their positions in this market. Separately, it is worth noting an increase in the supply of cold-rolled steel under the program for the approval of the car sheet, produced by MMK, for use by the world's leading car manufacturers at their car assembly plants in Russia. In the first half of 2015, shipments to international carmakers amounted to 6189 tons, which is significantly higher than the 251 tons of rolled stock delivered in the first six months of 2014. According to Pavel Shilyaev, General Director of OJSC MMK, the Magnitogorsk Combine has successfully passed the stage of pilot industrial supplies and has begun industrial supplies of rolled steel to world auto concerns that have created their own assembly facilities in Russia.

OJSC MMK has strengthened its position in the automotive industry thanks to the fulfillment of the requirements dictated by the modern automotive market, as well as the development of the demanded brand and size assortment and an increase in the supply of high-quality products. Currently, work continues on the acceptance of rolled metal products from leading foreign Russian car manufacturers.

With the commissioning of a modern cold rolling mill, Mill 2000, MMK significantly expanded the production of rolled metal for the automotive industry. Thanks to the technological capabilities of the cold rolling complex, MMK is able to meet the highest requirements for the surface quality of cold-rolled products and hot-dip galvanized steel, providing tight thickness tolerances. In addition, it became possible to apply phosphate and iron-zinc coatings in order to protect against corrosion.

The technological process of the 2000 cold rolling mill allows MMK to produce high-strength DP, TRIP and CP steels, which are in steady demand among manufacturers of auto components and automobiles.
